Have you felt the default offering of emojis isn’t enough to express yourself? Google is trying to remedy that with its new update for its Android keyboard app, Gboard. With this update comes a brand new feature — the Emoji Kitchen.

What Is the Emoji Kitchen?

The Emoji Kitchen aims to give you the power to remix your favorite emojis. The selection is a little limited because the emojis aren’t generated when you remix them. Instead, Google has pre-made some emoji combinations and shows you them when you select specific emoji.

For example, if you select the cowboy emoji, you’ll see all the remixes Google has for it, such as the love-heart emoji and the kissing emoji with cowboy hats on. Selecting the cactus emoji shows different variants on the plant, such as a ghost cactus. It’s a fun way to get more out of the current selection of emoji.

How to Use the Emoji Kitchen

First of all, you can only use the Emoji Kitchen with Gboard. This is usually the default keyboard that comes with Android phones. As such, make sure you have Gboard installed first, then ensure you’re currently using it instead of a third-party keyboard.

Then, be sure to update your Gboard to get this feature. At the time of writing, not every user will have the update ready to download. Google takes a little while to distribute these updates to users, so check back later if you don’t see any updates, or the Emoji Kitchen feature.

If you’d rather not wait for the update, you can grab the Gboard beta version to use Emoji Kitchen. You can leave the beta program at any time, so don’t worry about committing to the beta forever if you don’t like it.

If you have the correct version of Gboard, you’ll see a window pop up above the keyboard when you access the keyboard’s emoji menu. It’ll ask you to select an emoji to get suggestions.

Now, select an emoji that you want to mash up. Not every emoji has variants at the time of writing, so prod around until you find an emoji that works. When you do, you’ll see all the different kinds in the window above.

You can scroll left and right to view all the options. When you find the one you like, tap on it and Gboard will automatically send it.

Familiar Faces

With emojis becoming a staple in mobile communication, Google is remixing them to allow users to express themselves better. Whether you’re putting a cowboy hat on your fave emojis or you just want to see what happens when the monkey and cactus are combined, it’s a nice feature to have.
